Flogging in the British Army
Not a nice topic, but it is mentioned in ‘Schoolboy’. In the British Army at the time of Waterloo (1815), flogging was still a very common form of punishment. And the sentences were, to modern sensibilities, ferocious. Yes, the maximum really was 1,200 at that time, and men both received and survived such punishments. Our ancestors were tough. Flogging wasn’t abolished until 1881.
