The Marylebone Institute
The Marylebone Institute for Destitute and Foundling Children is my own invention. No disrespect is intended to the Marylebone Workhouse, which as one of the largest workhouses in central London did vital work under impossible conditions in assisting the poor of the city.
Workhouse Orphans
There is some disagreement over whether workhouse orphans were in demand or not. Some sources claim they were welcomed as being well trained and obedient, others that they were generally rejected for being too small and ignorant of a normal household. Presumably the truth takes a little from each attitude.
